StepStone Takes USC
Earlier this month, the StepStone team flew to Los Angeles to run our investment banking simulation at the USC Marshall School of Business. Even though it rained all week (yes, in LA), that didn’t stop students from showing up.
📊 IB Overview & Interview Prep: We kicked things off with an investment banking deep dive, covering industry fundamentals, technical and behavioral interview prep, and what firms look for in top candidates.
🤝 Networking & Recruitment Hacks: We shared actionable networking strategies to help students build meaningful connections and stand out in a competitive hiring process.
💼 Hands-On Experience: After completing pre-session materials, students jumped into a live deal simulation, applying accounting, valuation, and financial modeling skills, just like they would on the job.
We’ve been seeing a shift toward skills-based hiring, with employers prioritizing demonstrated ability over pedigree. StepStone simulations give students the real-world experience and industry insights needed to stand out in recruiting.

AI is Reshaping Investment Banking – Here’s What It Means for You
AI isn’t replacing finance roles, but the impact on junior roles is becoming impossible to ignore. With AI expected to drive 25-40% efficiency gains for analysts and associates, banks are looking actively looking for candidates who know how to use AI tools.
🔑 Key Takeaways
📉 AI is making technical work more efficient – Banks are starting to use AI for parts of financial modeling, pitch decks, and data analysis, shifting analysts' focus to higher-level thinking.
🎯 Hiring is evolving – With AI handling some of the number-crunching, firms want candidates who can interpret insights, problem-solve, and think strategically.
🏦 The biggest players are going all-in – Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, and UBS are leveraging AI to enhance deal sourcing, research, and M&A target identification.
For students, this means technical skills are still essential—but they’re just the starting point. The strongest candidates will be those who can apply their knowledge in a real-world setting, making hands-on experience and case-based learning more valuable than ever.
