What is StepStone and Why Should You Care?

A lot of getting what you want in life is dependent on two things: preparation and who you know. Now you may be saying to yourself “I’m only 20, I have no idea what I want to do, I don’t really know anyone, and I don’t know where to start.”

StepStone was created to solve that issue. We’re like the older kid you randomly bumped into on campus who just landed a cool job or your mom’s pickleball partner’s daughter who works at J.P. Morgan in New York.

Our mission is simple:

Educate students about business jobs early on and take the random chance factor out of the career success equation

We’re building an end-to-end platform to provide every student with the insider information and resources that have historically only been accessible to those lucky enough to know someone. Fortunately for you all, our team consists of professionals who have years of industry and recruiting experience.

The website is still under construction. BUT while we build out the platform, each week we’ll be sending a newsletter packed with everything you need to navigate the career process: from job discovery to interview resources to landing your dream gig 💰️

If you’re a student, we’re assuming that the end goal is to eventually get a job (why else are you at school?). If you’re a student, then we’re also assuming you like free stuff (subscribers only 😉). If both of those sound like you, then we are the PERFECT newsletter for you.

Let’s jump into it…

WTF is Networking and Why Does it Matter?

Ah, networking—the bread and butter of career advancement. Let's face it, folks, in the game of climbing the career ladder, who you know often matters more than what you know. It's all about making those connections. Employers? They prefer candidates they've had positive interactions with before or those vouched for by a current employee.

So, what exactly is networking? It's not merely a game of how many business cards you collect or racking up LinkedIn connections. When it comes to getting a job (especially your first), it’s a game of building relationships with people who will (hopefully) pass your resume along to whoever is in charge of hiring at their firm so you will (hopefully) get a first-round interview.

In a perfect world, this is how you should find your first job (AKA recruiting):

  1. Research the job you want

  2. Find someone who has that job

  3. Reach out to the person who has that job

  4. Schedule a call

  5. Don’t make a fool of yourself on the call

  6. Receive interview

  7. Get the offer

  8. Post on LinkedIn thanking everyone you’ve ever met for their support

  9. Live it up the rest of your time in school

Easy enough?

In the game of life, nobody succeeds without the help of others. It doesn’t matter where you grew up, what school you go to, or if you know someone in the industry… there are proven strategies that you can implement to get the job you want. Believe us — our founders are first-generation college students who started with zero industry connections and both landed top Wall Street jobs. GPA, extracurriculars, and a clean resume are all important, but networking is what opens your world of opportunity.

Green Wave Has Entered the (Bloomberg) Chat

  • Tulane's new Investment Banking initiative preps finance students with online and in-person Excel modeling courses, technical interview coaching, and industry executive lectures

  • So, investment banking recruitment now happens as early as sophomore year. Crazy, right? Schools are slowly waking up to the importance of preparing their students for these competitive roles early on

  • Even with these new programs, it's still the same old story. The students in the top business clubs? They're the ones snagging the most competitive internships and jobs. So, while progress is happening, there's still a long way to go before everyone's playing on a level field
