🔑 Takeaways from our Intro to Sales & Trading event: why students fail to land the role

  1. They don’t have a genuine answer to “tell me about yourself,” they give a boiler-plate resume walk-through

  2. Weak resume (formatting/experiences/extracurriculars/interests)

  3. Lack of knowledge or opinion on the markets

  4. Not being prepared for market technical questions and a stock pitch

  5. Difficulty keeping composure while interviewing

  6. Lack of proper dress code (Zoom + in-person)

How to convert the full-time offer

So, you’ve landed an internship—congrats! But now comes the real challenge: turning your summer gig into a full-time job. In this newsletter, we’ve got 10 🔑 tips to help you stand out and secure the full-time offer 🤘

😁 Attitude

Be willing to take on any task with enthusiasm. Demonstrating a positive attitude and flexibility shows that you're eager to contribute and support the team in any capacity. This makes a strong impression, especially with junior professionals, indicating that you don't see yourself as above any task.

💡 Ask smart questions

If you don’t understand something and can't find the answer on ChatGPT or Google, ask the next most junior person on your team. Explain where you’ve looked and what your current understanding is. For example, if you’re struggling with an Excel formula, you might say, “I’ve checked online and past examples the team has worked on, but I can’t get this formula to work. Could you show me how to fix it?” This shows initiative and respect for others’ time, highlighting your problem-solving skills and commitment to learning.

🤦 No repeat mistakes

Mistakes happen. What’s important is learning from them. Keep a running list of your slip-ups and review it before sending any deliverables. Showing that you can adapt and improve demonstrates a growth mindset and a readiness to learn—two traits that employers love.

🌍️ Stay on top of news

Keep up with industry trends and developments. Being informed demonstrates your genuine interest and proactive engagement in your field. This knowledge allows you to contribute more meaningfully to discussions and have a deeper understanding of the work you are doing.

🚪 First in, last out

Arriving early and staying late shows your dedication and strong work ethic. This can be especially important in a post-COVID world where face time can distinguish you from other interns. It signals that you’re committed and willing to go the extra mile.

🤝 Regular check-ins

Schedule regular meetings (at least 4 through the summer) with your boss and senior team members. These check-ins are perfect for getting feedback and guidance, showing that you’re proactive about your development. They also help keep you aligned with your goals and the team's expectations.

🔗 Networking

Build relationships across different groups within the company. Networking helps you understand various aspects of the business and creates a support system. Plus, it can lead to new opportunities and insights into how your role fits into the bigger picture.

🔎 Double-check your work

Attention to detail is crucial. Whether it’s a calendar invite or a detailed analysis, make sure everything is accurate. This prevents mistakes and shows professionalism and reliability—qualities that are crucial for securing a full-time position.

⏱️ Responsiveness

Respond promptly to emails, messages, and calls. Being responsive shows you’re attentive, reliable, and professional. It builds trust with your team and shows that you’re dependable.

🧥 Dress professionally

First impressions matter. Dress according to your company's dress code and maintain good hygiene. Being well-groomed and presentable, especially in client-facing roles, shows respect for your workplace and demonstrates that you take your role seriously.
